Guillermo del Toro's Splice premiered on Wednesday, June 2nd at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California. The black carpet event welcomed cast and crew as well as celebrities Robert Downey Jr., Kenny G, Mehcad Brooks and Hollywood producer mogul Joel Silver.

Delphine Chaneac plays the grown-up creature Dren, the moral heart of the sci-film film about the gene splice creation of new forms of life.

The stunning French actress and model has been compared to a French version of Angelina Jolie. She has only appeared in one English-speaking film, The Pink Panther.

This demanding role required her to convincingly portray a creature made in a lab by an ambitious geneticist couple. 'Dren' is part lizard, part bird, a dash of what-the-heck-is-that and a big dollop of human DNA.

Producer Joel Silver was blown away by Splice at the Sundance Film Festival screening and convinced Warner Bros. to pick up the film. A Splice sequel may be in the works! Splice opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, June 4.

Splice Opens June 4th: 4 New Clips | Guillermo del Toro Bids Farewell to 'The Hobbit'

The Guillermo del Toro executive produced Splice, starring Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley opens in theaters Friday, June 4, 2010.

The sci-fi thriller is about two genetic engineers who Splice DNA from different animals to create new species. When they secretly use human DNA to create a highly intelligent creature, they risk losing control over the entire experiment.

The film is rated R for disturbing elements including strong sexuality, nudity, sci-fi violence and language.

Guillermo del Toro Bids Farewell to The Hobbit

By now you may have heard the sad news that Guillermo del Toro has departed The Hobbit due his frustration over the fact the project has not yet received the green light to film. This three year commitment, turned into a six year commitment. The two Hobbit scripts he co-wrote are finished. Creatures, wardrobe and makeup have been finalized. The team is awaiting the green light from the studio to start shooting. The sale of MGM studios has to happen before the film can get green lit. Who knows when that will be!

In a press release posted by TORN GDT had this to say . . .

“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming “The Hobbit,” I am faced with the hardest decision of my life”, says Guillermo. “After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I’ve been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed. The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wish the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director”.

Peter Jackson made it perfectly clear: Guillermo has other long term commitments for other projects and just could not continue to wait. “We feel very sad to see Guillermo leave the Hobbit, but he has kept us fully in the loop and we understand how the protracted development time on these two films, due to reasons beyond anyone’s control – has compromised his commitment to other long term projects”, says Executive Producer Peter Jackson. “The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn’t feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years."

The good news is that GTD can get back to working on this great slate of films in various stages of development: AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, HATER, CHAMPIONS, SATURN AND THE END OF DAYS, PINNOCHIO, DEATH: THE HIGH COST OF LIVING, THE WITCHES, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, FRANKENSTEIN and DROOD. Its anyone's guess what project will go next. Welcome home Guillermo!

Two New 'Splice' TV Spots

Warner Bros released two brand new movie trailers for the upcoming film Splice from executive producer Guillermo Del Toro (The Hobbit, Hellboy) by director Vincenzo Natali (High Rise, Cypher) and starring Adrien Brody (Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Sarah Polley (Mr. Nobody).

Synopsis: Clive and Elsa are young, brilliant and ambitious. The new animal species they engineered have made them rebel superstars of the scientific world. In secret, they introduce human DNA into the experiment. The result is something that is greater than the sum of its parts: a female animal-human hybrid that may be a step up on the evolutionary ladder. They think they may have created the perfect organisim, until she makes a final shocking metamorphosis that could destroy them … and the rest of humanity.

In March we reported Splice was picked up Warner Bros Pictures after a successful showing at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Splice is a sci-fi thriller about a genetic experiment gone horribly wrong. Guillermo Del Toro (The Hobbit, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) is executive producer on the Vincenzo Natali (Cube, High Rise, Cypher) helmed film which stars Adrien Brody (Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Canada's sweetheart actor/director Sarah Polley (Away from Her, Dawn of the Dead, eXistenZ, The Sweet Hereafter, ).

Synopsis

Adrien Brody (Clive) and Sarah Polley (Elsa) are superstar genetic engineers who specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly conduct their own experiments. The result is Dren (played by Delphine Chanéac), an amazing, strangely beautiful creature of uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. And though, at first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams, she begins to grow and learn at an accelerated rate—and threatens to become their worst nightmare.

Splice opens theatrically on June 4th.

'Splice' Hits Theatres This Summer

Splice the genre-warping creature feature will be entering the blockbuster arena of the Summer 2010 lineup.

Splice premiered in North America at Sundance earlier this year and garnered rave reviews from industry sci-fi and horror fans. The film is executive produced by Guillermo del Toro (The Hobbit, Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy I & II, Blade II) and directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Paris, je t'aime). Natali's Cube is one of the greatest thrillers ever made, it is the Godfather of scifi thriller movies.

Producer Joel Silver and his Dark Castle label distributed by Warner Bros recently closed a distribution deal for the genetic mutation thriller Splice. It will give the film a wide summer release on 3,000 screens, and a P&A commitment north of $25 million, and more likely in the vicinity of $35 million to $40 million.

Splice is a modern Frankenstein story, starring Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody as genetic scientists who create humanoid life with nightmarish consequences.

WB has planned a June 4th release date.

According to /Film there's a big Splice deal on the verge of happening. There’s just not much cash in indies these days, so the glory days of massive buys at the fest seem to be gone for the time being. Producer Joel Silver and his Dark Castle label distributed by Warner Bros is in the last stages of closing a distribution deal for the genetic mutation thriller Splice. It will give the film a wide summer release on 3,000 screens, and a P&A commitment north of $25 million, and more likely in the vicinity of $35 million to $40 million.

Compared to the modest $5 million and lower sums paid for films at this year's Sundance, this is a huge bet by Dark Castle that it's found the next Paranormal Activity

From Executive Producer Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, The Hobbit) and director Vincenzo Natali (best known for his sci-fit hit Cube) comes Splice the sci-fi thriller starring Adrien Brody (Clive) and Sarah Polley (Elsa). The Splice North American Premiere took place at the Sundance Film Festival yesterday, Friday, January 22 at midnight at the Egyptian Theater, in Park City.

After the Splice screening Natali was on hand for a Q&A along with stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. The first question went something like “That’s the most f—–d up movie I’ve ever seen, and I mean that in a good way”. Splice is a meditation on the relationship between creature and creators. The story revolves around two brilliant geneticists (played by Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody) who create hybrid organisms spliced from the genes of various animals. Their research has medical applications, and being young and adventurous, they target the top of the food chain: human DNA. Needless-to-say, mayhem ensues. But what makes Splice unique is that the true nature of the horror is emotional. And the ties that bind the scientists to their manufactured offspring is familial. Think Frankenstein!

Presented by Guillermo Del Toro, whose multiple Oscar-winner “Pan’s Labyrinth” transformed the face of fantasy film, Splice is the long-awaited new thriller by Vincenzo Natali, whose debut feature, “Cube,” catapulted him to the forefront of genre specialists.

Splice is premiering at Sitges today. Watch the mysterious animal/human hybrid created by rogue scientists Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody, who decide to tamper with the laws of nature in the name of research.

The film itself was actually shot around the end of 2007 and has been waiting for a release date for ages. While it has dates around some of Europe, the UK and US are still waiting for their shot at.

Splice was written by director Vincenzo Natali and screenwriters Doug Taylor and Antoinette Terry Bryant.The script was originally meant to follow up Natali’s Cube (1997), but the budget and restricted technology hindered the project. In 2007, the project entered active development as a 75% Canadian and 25% French co-production, receiving a budget of $26 million. The director described the film: “Splice is very much about our genetic future and the way science is catching up with much of the fiction out there. “[This] is a serious film and an emotional one. And there’s sex… Very unconventional sex. The centerpiece of the movie is a creature which goes through a dramatic evolutionary process. The goal is to create something shocking but also very subtle and completely believable.”

In March we posted an update on Vincenzo Natali's Splice with some photos from the set. The film suddenly disappeared off the radar until now.

Todd Brown of TwitchFilm reports Splice will premiere at The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia which runs October 1st to 12th. While distribution politics have kept the film out of the big North American festivals, the Spanish genre fest in Sitges - one of the premiere festivals of its type in the world - have just announced their competition titles.

Guillermo del Toro is one of the Executive Producers of the film. He is currently in New Zealand working on The Hobbit. He recently updated fans on his current projects.

Director Natali says that the film is: “…about finding humanity in the monster and… the monsters that lurk within humanity.”

Canadian Writer-director Vincenzo Natali will soon release 'Splice' a scifi-horror film executive produced by Guillermo del Toro.

"The Bonnie and Clyde of genetics" features Clive and Elsa, superstars of the genetic engineering world. They specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create fantastical new hybrids. The charismatic couple wants to use human DNA in a new hybrid – something that could yield astronomical medical benefits. The pharmaceutical company that funds their research, however, is more interested in exploiting their earlier triumphs for easier, short-term profit. Clive and Elsa secretly conduct their own experiment. The result is Dren (Delphine Chanéac): an amazing creature who exhibits an array of unexpected developments, both physical and intellectual. Dren exceeds their wildest dreams... and, ultimately, their most terrifying nightmare.

Director Natali says that the film is: “…about finding humanity in the monster and… the monsters that lurk within humanity.”

In the twelve years since Natali first began talking about the project, he finished two other movies (Nothing and Cypher), a segment of Paris, Je T'Aime, and the storyboards for hip werewolf picture Ginger Snaps.

What took so long? Explained Natali's long-time production partner Steve Hoban: "I can say this for both Vincenzo and I: We make movies in Canada. We don't make movies anywhere else." If you want to make a small indie drama, Canada's not a bad place to do it, but if you're looking to fund and shoot a high concept, $30 million or so scifi-horror film... well, try and name another large budget genre picture financed in Canada over the past ten years. It wasn't until French outfit Gaumont put up some cash and Guillermo del Toro got involved as an exec producer that things finally got rolling.

And then, ironically, being a Canadian production in 2007 became a huge asset: Because American productions were being canceled in the lead up to the writer's strike, Adrien Brody suddenly became available to join local girl Sarah Polley in the lead roles; the two of them offered instant credibility. Says Hoban: "For us, though, the reason to cast them had nothing to do with whether they liked this kind of film or had done this kind of film before or not. It was all about casting actors that you would believe to be scientists... Adrien and Sarah were the leading two who were the right kind of age and who you could really believe."

A limited theatrical US release is planned for Sept 18, 2009.
