Description
Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, Guillermo del Toro made his feature directorial debut in 1993 with the film Cronos, and has since gone on to direct, among other films, Mimic, The Devil's Backbone, Blade II, Hellboy I, Hellboy II, and Pan's Labyrinth, which garnered enormous critical praise worldwide and won three Academy Awards. Del Toro has produced and written films numerous films. He is currently working on a remake of Frankenstein; it's been announced that James Cameron will produce Del Toro's 3-D At the Mountains of Madness, and that Del Toro will direct Disney's The Haunted Mansion.

With Chuck Hogan, Del Toro has become a novelist as well. Their first novel was The Strain, about which all that must be said is this:

They have always been here. Vampires. In secret and in darkness. Waiting. Now their time has come.

In one week, Manhattan will be gone. In one month, the country.

In two months -- the world.

"I cannot wait to see where Del Toro and Hogan take us next." -- James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of The Doomsday Key

The wait is over! Guillermo Del Toro returns with The Fall -- the second blood-chilling volume in their critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling Strain Trilogy. The Fall picks up where The Strain left off -- with a vampiric infection spreading like wildfire across America as a small band of heroes struggles to save the dwindling human race from the vampire plague. Horror fiction and dark fantasy fans will be swept up in this epic story that bestselling author Nelson DeMille describes as "Bram Stoker meets Stephen King meets Michael Crichton."

In addition to his multiple screen ventures, Del Toro is, with Chuck Hogan, writing the third volume in The Strain trilogy.

Guillermo del Toro's 'Mountains of Madness', 'Haunted Mansion' & 'The Fall' Book Tour Dates

Guillermo del Toro news and rumors are still flying since his recent visit to San Diego Comic Con.

At The Mountains of Madness

Since departing 'The Hobbit', Guillermo del Toro's next film has been the subject of many rumours. The most popular being that his next project will be At The Mountains Of Madness (2013), an adaptation of the HP Lovecraft tale that will be shot as a 3D film for Universal Pictures. The bonus surprise is that his good friend James Cameron will come aboard as a producer. A little known fact: Cameron helped del Toro out years ago when his father was kidnapped in Mexico.

GDT told the Comic Con crowd he'd set his next film shortly, and that it would be scary. At the Mountains of Madness fits that bill.

Set in the 1930s At The Mountains Of Madness reveals the existence of a remote frozen and ancient (non-human) city in the central wastes of Antarctica. Mankind's true origins are revealed (incidental 'playthings' created for amusement by the Great Old Ones). Many of the expedition members are killed, one (Danforth) driven incurably insane by the ancient knowledge and unpleasant events which overtake the expedition. The theme of 'forbidden knowledge' is echoed in the very opening lines of the story by the expedition's leader and survivor (Professor Dyer of the Miskatonic University): "I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why".

Those characters who attempt to make use of such knowledge are almost invariably doomed. Sometimes their work attracts the attention of malevolent beings; other times, evoking the spirit of Frankenstein, they are destroyed by monsters of their own creation.

The film will be a big ticket item, shot in 3D where Cameron's expertise can really help. Deadline.com reports the film will begin pre-production in the next few weeks, and shoot next summer.

Del Toro's company is making films like Frankenstein (2012) and the Kurt Vonnegut novel Slaughterhouse-Five at Universal. ATMOM was included in the multi-picture deal with Universal back in 2007. No official announcement has been made by Universal or del Toro.

In the meantime check out a cool "ATMOM fan faux trailer" after the jump.

The Haunted Mansion

At the Comic Con TRON panel del Toro announced that he (and writing partner Matthew Robbins) will be writing and producing a film called The Haunted Mansion (2012) inspired by the theme park ride.

The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive Q&A with del Toro revealed the following...

"It's going to be a thrill ride for the whole family but it's definitely going to be scary," GDT said. "(Walt) Disney is one of the creators of some of the scariest images in my childhood. People forget that he not only made sweet images but also images of nightmare. We need to honor that side of the legacy."

Disney envisions the new movie as one that will draw in the four-quadrant audience with real scares, drawing upon Del Toro's ability to summon up fantastic images like those he created in "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Hellboy."

"The result is a unique combination of dark and fun," said del Toro. "I want to really honor the two sensibilities."

'Hatbox Ghost' Designed by Kevin Kidney & Jody Daily
Released in 2005

Specific plot details and creature characters are being guarded. However, one ghost that will appear is the Hatbox Ghost, who is dressed in a cloak and top hat, and whose head disappears and reappears in a hatbox the ghost holds in his hand.

"There are several mansions around the world and he is the spider in the center of the web of these mansions around the world," said del Toro. "He will be a pivotal figure in the screenplay."

Del Toro and Disney are anticipating a longer-than-usual development process. He wants to not only nail down a script but also the designs of the ghostly multitude.

He also wants to spend time creating a visually stylized world not just for the mansion but for the "real" world as well, mixing the ideas of the original concept drawing with his own visual signature. The last thing he wants is a mansion movie with a creaky musty tone.

"We want to make a haunted house movie for the 21st century," he said.

Guillermo Del Toro's Update From the Saturn Awards | Win a Trip to Meet GDT

Guillermo del Toro at the 36th Annual Saturn Awards.
He'll be "shopping"the SDCC floor all 3 days!

Guillermo del Toro updated Collider on all projects including Hellboy III, Death: The High Cost of Living, Frankenstein and at the Mountains of Madness while backstage at the 36th Annual Saturn Awards.

The 20 minute video interview with GDT reveals the following highlights:

Frankenstein is still in the works and Doug Jones will play the monster. Sculpting is done and testing will be done with Doug soon.

Hellboy III will only happen after his next project.

Doesn't reveal what his next project is
but says he wants to make something a bit smaller this time. He has narrowed his list of projects to 3 and they all have scripts much further along. The script he really wants to do he started 15 years ago!

He said that leaving The Hobbit was "the hardest decision he has made", and when asked if MGM sorted out their troubles, would it be a possibility he would get back on board, he said "it hurts me to even speculate".

A Death: The High Cost of Living movie still very much holds his interest, but both he and the other potential producers are convinced that the only director should be Neil Gaimen.

He'll be promoting Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark at Comic Con where he will be announcing a project he will be writing, producing and maybe directing. He'll be at San Diego Comic-Con for 3 days to do some "shopping" for his man cave (his second home).

He says that since he has come home from New Zealand, he has been approached to direct a lot of projects by various studios. He doesn't say anything specific, but reveals that there is "a lot of neat stuff cooking", and a lot of the films would be "geekgasms for everyone".

Talks Splice.

Says his brother is making for him the car from the movie The Car (1977) starring James Brolin! He’ll be driving around Los Angeles in 3 months in it. Love it! Director Sean McConville's (Deadline) latest supernatural film is by the same name, The Car. Ryan Davies is haunted by a ghost chick who convinces him to hunt down and kill her abductors while restoring his Pontiac Gto Le Manns.

Watch the hilarious interview with GDT below after the jump to discover more cool details.

Guillermo del Toro Dishes the Latest on "The Hobbit"

Director Guillermo del Toro recently sent a little message to TheOneRing updating Tolkien fans about the upcoming two-part film adaptation of The Hobbit. The film has yet to get a official green light and there is an explanation of why below. GDT and Peter Jackson are still doing everything they can to get ready to shoot the movie.

Here is what GDT had to say:

One of the most read members of TORn’s message boards dropped by to update us on “The Hobbit”. How reliable is this guy? Well, since he happens to be directing the two-movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s first published book in Middle-earth and is living in New Zealand to do so, we think trusting Guillermo del Toro’s information is rock solid. But, we are going to make you click inside to see what he had to say. (It was a lot) You can also follow the link to his post on our message boards and join in the conversation.

The highly decorated director writes:
So, now that PJ’s Lovely Bones tour is almost over, I thought it wise- seeing how some can whip up into a frenzy- to drop by and chat a bit.

A) About ONLY 3 actors returning: I think the emphasis on “only” is what slant the news the wrong way. I cannot imagine Gollum being played by anyone but Andy and in the second script there is still much in discussion to lock everything for now. Both PJ and I chime in on things “as they are at the moment” and, of course, things change.

I, for one, understand where Peter’s coming from since 30% of my STRAIN tour questions, HELLBOY II, ORPHANAGE promotion questions, etc, etc where about the Hobbit. At different time we have been closer in locking on a piece of casting or hoping to get a script delivered, etc and things simply changed as we went along. So, don’t etch this in stone or anything we both have said in the past, in stone since we communicate what we can when the window of exposure to the press and fans happens.

I still prefer to keep the dialogue open- inexact as it may get- that to remain mum or one-sided with the community that can really understand this project.

B) The target for production. Its simple: we may say what we want but until there are two scripts delivered and budgets and schedules to support them we will be all under a yellow light of development. THAT we have not stopped. As I have reported in the past, we are scouting, designing (my last 3 hour meeting with Weta was this morning) and will not stop. BUT the greenlight and thus commencement can only be granted by the studio. Pete as producer and me as director will do everything we can in the meantime.

C) Is there any trouble brewing with WB? Not at all. All I can say is that they reacted to our delivered script with great delight and we have been receiving strong support in our development.

Smaug is being animation tested, we are editing the previs, doing final selections on Dwarven War Artifacts and Gear and starting many fabrication tests for armies, prosthetics and wardrobes, etc

However, I do plan to be less and less in the public spotlight for two simple reasons: One: I am damn busy prepping this two Behemoths. Two: quite likely, I’ll have very limited, if any, promotional time for Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark or The Fall (Second Strain Book) myself but fear not- I will drop in as much as possible, as always.

Love
GDT

The Strain Trilogy's The Fall (Strain Trilogy 2) and The Night Eternal (Strain Trilogy 3) will be out in June 2010 and 2011, respectively.

The excitement continues to build. I can’ wait until we actually find out who ends up being cast and seeing the creature designs for the film. Be prepared to be blown away!

Guillermo 'Disney' del Toro Dishes on DOUBLE DARE YOU Production Label & More!

Guillermo del Toro visited the DelToroFilms message board today to update his fans on the new Disney Double Dare You label which we reported on recently; and projects in pre-pro or production.

He confirmed today that although books, games and other merchandise will be part of the Disney Double Dare You label, DDY will release "theatrical, high end" animated feature films. These will be "edgier" animated films that could move into "PG-13" territory.

"For those that know me- I am a Disney nut. One whole room in BLEAK HOUSE is dedicated to the HAUNTED MANSION and I have a huge "Altar" (complete with offerings and candles) dedicated to Disney villians. I have collected original concept art for years and own many key pieces of art by Mary Blair, Kay Nielsen and Eyvind Earle, including FANTASIA, SLEEPING BEAUTY, ICHABOD CRANE, ALICE IN WONDERLAND and about 20 perfect concepts for NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

I have been going to Disneyland once a year or more -many times alone- for 40 years... and I have been planning this, my new relationship with PIXAR/DISNEY for a couple of years ago> I have a plan and I have been carefully pursuing it- and, no, it didn't start with THE HOBBIT. It predates it by a long while. I am trying to map out the next 10 years of my creative life and I'm touching the narrative forms I am interested on. That will include books, animation and games aside from films. I intend to be fluent in those languages and mediums, not as a user but as a practitioner.

Remember, on my early years, NECROPIA made make up FX and animation. I bought and rebuilt the FIRST 35 mm animation camera in my hometown (still in use) a MITCHELL NC with Berthiot optical lenses. I trained the keystone of new animators there and dabbled myself in stop motion and clay animation. This is one of the rare instances in which life follows a design.

DDY has a ratings ceiling of PG-13 and I think animation can move in that direction. With PIXAR tackling stuff like the MARS novels and other filmmakers pushing the creation of 3-D environments and characters (AVATAR, Zemeckis) I believe we can hope for animation projects that can be edgy and powerful. And, no, GOOSEBUMPS is not my model- As I said, the E-ticket rides of Yore are my inspiration, as are Chernabog or Maleficent or the Witch in Snow White, etc I am planning SCARY stuff to be part of the experience. The books will have a fantastic angle- soon to be revealed. Dick Cook and John Lasseter got excited about this precisely because the model I proposed is completely new."

This clarification rules out that the film projects would be Direct-to-DVD releases. and guarantees a GDT-inspired Disney feature film.

GDT'S SCHEDULE UPDATE

THE HOBBIT design, script and maquettes are going full steam. So is previz-

THE FALL (second book of THE STRAIN) is going back and forth between CH and I. Its in Chuck's court at the moment. Hobbit is on PJ, PB and FW side too, so I dedicate my writing time (daily, 2-3 hours before HOBBIT office work) to polish other stuff or start new projects.

"Don't BE AFRAID OF THE DARK" wraps next week. And I have been guarding and caring for it very closely. Its great!!

TROLLHUNTERS will be developed -from the start- with a real co-director that will be in Wellington for the next couple of years so I can manage this without going bi-coastal.

Three of the UNIVERSAL projects have COMPLETED scripts awaiting a polish. We have completed maquettes and prostethic sculptures for FRANKENSTEIN and in the course of next year will start R&D on my lifetime commitment AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS.

DROOD
has a scribe (a great one) and is progressing to draft-

AT WB, my script for THE WITCHES is looking for a new director (still one of Liccy Dahl's favorite adaptations ever).

And we can hardly wait!!! For the latest GDT news join the Guillermo del Toro Facebook Group.
